Warne's Return Can Lift Hampshire to Double

SHANE WARNE could lose the Ashes and then help Hampshire complete their rise to the summit of English domestic cricket, writes David Lloyd.

Warne was on the telephone to his county mates within minutes of Saturday's C&G Trophy triumph against Warwickshire, tearing himself away from watching Australia's bowlers being mauled at Chelmsford to congratulate acting captain Shaun Udal.

But come next week, following the final Test at The Oval, Warne will be back in charge of Hampshire, doubtless reminding everyone that a spectacular double is within reach.

Hampshire lost their last two championship matches before the world's best leg-spinner switched his attention to the Ashes series. While he has been away, they have won three and drawn two to lift themselves into second spot, three and a half points behind Notts, though playing one game more.

But no one at the Rose Bowl underestimates the huge influence Warne has had on the county's revival during his two seasons as captain. …
