Angry Man Smashes Up His Home

A man barricaded himself indoors and spent hours smashing up his own home.

Terrified families on Millbeck Gardens, Wrekenton, Gateshead, called police after hearing windows being shattered at a nearby house.

The man, who has not been named, was seen throwing his possessions out onto the street at around 11am yesterday.

Negotiators were called to the scene and spent more than three hours trying to calm him down.

The man threw objects including a television at the officers before they finally smashed their way through piles of junk into the house shortly after 4pm.

Anxious neighbours looked on as the street was cordoned off.

Paul Larkin, 18, a student who lives on Millbeck Gardens, said: "We were all just standing around when it happened.

"He kept throwing stuff out of the windows then riot police with their dogs arrived.

"People were worried it could have got dangerous and the police seemed to take ages to get to him. …
