In the final part of our week-long Community Champions Awards launch we take a look at the Outstanding Act of Bravery and Champion Carer awards.

BOB LAWTON is the perfect example of why our Community Champions are special.

Bob became the Evening Gazette's Champion Neighbour 2004.

It was an accolade he was extremely proud of.

Despite being discharged from hospital the day before the ceremony the grandad-of-two pulled out all the stops to attend.

"He really wanted to go," says his proud wife Frances. "He just said, "the show has to go on" and being there was an honour."

Sadly Bob died peacefully, aged 53, on February 24 at Teesside Hospice.

Bob, of New Marske, had been diagnosed with cancer of the small bowel and despite undergoing major surgery he had been told there was nothing more the doctors could do.

Even with just months left to live the keen gardener carried on planting and tending Marske's 42 hanging baskets. …
