Commissioners Ready to Move to New Chamber; and It May Come in under Budget

YULEE -- Starting next month, the Nassau County Commission will have its meetings in a larger chamber filled with new equipment.

The commission set aside $100,171 for the move, new chairs, new computers, presentation equipment and a custom-made worktable in February, but the county's building maintenance director said he doesn't think it will cost that much.

Commissioners will move from their meeting place at 86026 Pages Dairy Road to 96135 Nassau Place. The room was used as a temporary courtroom before the Judicial Annex was built.

The move and new equipment are being paid for from an impact fee fund created for county government growth. Builders pay the fees when they get county permits.

County Building Maintenance Director Daniel Salmon said he saved money when he purchased about 100 chairs for commissioners and audience members. The commission budgeted $25,000 for the chairs, but Salmon said the county spent $18,000.

"That's $7,000 going back to the [impact fee] fund," Salmon said. "I don't think we'll come close to using [the $100,000 budgeted]."

The rest of the project has been on hold until a contractor finishes the circular desk for commissioners and county staff, Salmon said.

He said the holdup was that the contractor was to have had the desk ready Friday, then he would bring it in and assemble it.

Haverlock Furniture Co. Inc. of Jacksonville is custom-building a round table, intended to bring commissioners and staff closer together during meetings -- at a cost of about $7,500, Salmon said. Commissioners now sit behind a traditional half-circle desk, and staff members sit at a table near the audience.
