A Jordanian asylum seeker jailed for a sex assault could be kicked out of the UK after completing his sentence.

Ali Qasem, 42, of Aspley Street, Middlesbrough, was jailed for three years at Teesside Crown Court yesterday.

The court heard Qasem carried out the sex attack after following a woman and her friend into an alley off Linthorpe Road last November.

Prosecutor Ian West said Qasem started touching the woman until he was chased away and arrested.

Qasem, who had no previous convictions in the UK, denied doing anything wrong but was found guilty by a jury.

Christopher Baker, defending, said the incident was brief, not pre-meditated and out of character.

Mr Baker said Qasem's family suffered greatly because of their status as asylum seekers. His wife was attacked and his children bullied, and they had to move away more than once.

The court heard one assault left his wife with such severe injuries that she has to choose whether to undergo surgery which could paralyse her. …
