Newburn Swimming Club ended the season with a splash, taking five medals at the BAGCAT Age Group National Championships in Sheffield.

The first day saw 11-year-old Jessica Thielmann claim a silver in the 400m freestyle final. Although seeded fastest for the final, Jessica was pipped by Norwich's Anne Bochmann.

Just a few events later, the Newburn 11-13 girls freestyle relay team took off. Danielle Robinson led the team off with a very fast first 100, her first 50 under 30 seconds ( 29.97.

Fresh from her victory ceremony, Jessica went next in 1.04. A good takeover from Harriet Franks, 13, saw yet another fast lap.

Taking the finishing 100 was Olivia White, also 13, who led the team to an astonishing fourth with her 1.01 behind the stronger, more experienced teams of Beckenham, Guildford City and City of Sheffield.

Other finalists on the opening day of the championships included Josh Crowther in the 13-year-olds 200m back (ninth), Danielle Robinson in the 12-year-olds 400m freestyle (eighth) and Jessica Thielmann in the 11-year-olds 200m breaststroke (10th). …
