A LOVING mum is giving her daughter the ultimate gift - the gift of life - by selflessly donating one of her own kidneys.

Lesley Burton has always known daughter Laura would one day need a transplant after her premature birth left her with kidney failure.

From the day doctors told her the heartbreaking news, the Billingham mum pledged to donate one of her own kidneys.

Fifteen years on, that day has finally arrived. The family received the fantastic news that mum was a perfect match and the operation is being planned for January in Newcastle.

And as a special thank you, 15-year-old Laura has put her mum forward for the Gazette's Mum of the Year award.

"My mum is not just Mum of the Year, she is the mum of a lifetime!" she said.

Laura was born eight weeks premature after her mum suffered a haemorrhage. She was delivered by emergency Caesarean at North Tees Hospital in Stockton.

"I got transferred to the RVI at Newcastle when I was 36 hours old," said Laura. "The doctors diagnosed me with kidney failure. One of my kidneys did not work, my other was failing.

"They told my family I would one day need a kidney transplant. From that day my mum said she would give me one of hers."

Laura was in the RVI for around four months, and her mum stayed at her bedside. She was not allowed home until her mum and dad, Robert, learned how to work the dialysis machine and tube feed.

"My dad worked away at the time so he needed to learn when he was home," she said. "However, my mum was so determined to get me home she learned whenever the nurses were free to help.

"My mum did my dialysis and the tube feeding every night for about two years without complaining and always made me feel happy and loved. …
