Parents' Grief for Soldier

The grieving parents of a teenage soldier from Durham killed in a road crash in Germany paid tribute to him last night.

Craig Atkinson, 19, was killed alongside two of his comrades when a 4x4 Land Rover hit a tree.

Craig was in the vehicle with colleagues, craftsman Craig Smith and Gunner Kenneth Laga, who were also killed near their base at Gutersloh, on August 31. No other vehicle was involved and police in Germany are due to conduct further interviews with the driver, who survived.

The funeral of the only child of former soldier Paul, 44, and Tracy Atkinson, 41, of Durham School, Durham City, will be held at the school chapel tomorrow, followed by a service at Durham Crematorium.

Yesterday, Mr Atkinson, head porter at the school, said: "Craig joined the Army as a recovery mechanic with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, but his ambition was to be a Royal Military Policeman.

"He was a popular lad with boys and girls, he was fine looking with a great personality, and the school chapel will be packed on Saturday. …
