Newer homes in part of South Bank threatened with demolition may still have a future after all.

As part of a multi-million pound scheme, hundreds of homes in old South Bank are earmarked for demolition as a new district centre, based around Low Grange next to the Trunk Road, springs up.

Some residents have welcomed the idea, but others are adamant they don't want the heart of South Bank shifted.

Consultants recommend demolition and a new district centre because, they say, housing providers won't invest in the old area.

But in a report to Redcar and Cleveland Council, the authority's cabinet member for housing and neighbourhood renewal, Cllr Chris Abbott, confirmed "selective demolition" may yet be an option.

He told the full council: "We have already carried out a lot of consultation in South Bank and that process will continue, including a house-to-house survey.

"It is clear we need to continue to treat sympathetically the issues around acquisition of people's homes for demolition and maintain an open mind. …
