First Division leaders Newcastle Blue Star are looking for a new manager following the shock decision of Andy Gowens to join Durham City.

Gowens brought in eight new players in recent weeks, leading Blue Star into pole position, and they had a 100% record until they lost at Bedlington Terriers on Wednesday night.

"It is a real blow for us. We were rocked by the news and now we are looking for a replacement," said secretary Jim Anderson. Anyone interested in what is regarded as one of the top jobs in the North-East is asked to contact Anderson on 0792 927 2657.

Today Blue Star turn their attentions to the FA Vase, visiting Yorkshire Amateur in the first qualifying round.

Gowens, meanwhile, will take charge of Durham City for the first time in their home tie with Eccleshill United. Chairman Stewart Dawson said it was the unanimous decision of the board to offer Gowens the post. "Andy is one of the best managers around. It must have been a difficult decision for him but we are delighted he has come on board," enthused Dawson.

Gowens is Durham's fourth manager in a matter of months. When Billy Cruddas stood down, Andy Toman and Neil Hixon briefly filled the role before both were dismissed.

"We felt we had to part company with Neil Hixon following last Saturday's FA Cup defeat by Hebburn Town. It was not working out and we thought it better to take the decision now and have a change at the helm," added Dawson.

Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastics visit Curzon Ashton with a full squad to choose from and Chester-le-Street are at Glasshoughton Welfare hopeful that Paul Richardson, who has missed the last four games, will come through a test on his injury.

Gary Andison is suspended and Martin Bowes doubtful because his wife is expecting their first child.

There was almost a change of manager at Sunderland Nissan but Wilf Constantine, who resigned following his side's thrashing by Benfield Bay Plastics last Saturday, was persuaded to change his mind.

He has Gavin Cogden, Darren Sankey and Mark Nicholson resuming for the all-league tie at Northallerton Town but Chris Leonard and Neil Moan are banned. …
