Newcastle lost their second game in the space of a week at SportCity last night, Ishmael Miller scoring the only goal of the game midway through the first period.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness will be hoping for a better outcome when the first-team sides meet at Premiership level at St James's Park on Saturday.

Steve Harper was given a run-out, playing in goal for the first time at reserve level this season, while Robbie Elliott also started.

Martin Brittain was the only other player in the starting XI with Premiership experience, though Alan O'Brien had enjoyed a brief taste of the top flight when he was an unused substitute in Sunday's 3-0 win at Blackburn.

City started the brighter of the two teams, with Lee Croft and Miller looking threatening in attack.

Neither side created many clear cut openings in the early exchanges, with play confined to the middle third of the field.
