The thread lift

Fans of Nip/Tuck may have seen Vanessa Redgrave's character undergoing this procedure in the last series. A web of barbed sutures is threaded through the face, from the temples to the lower cheeks, then tightened, thus hoisting sagging facial tissues into more youthful contours.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr Lawrence Kirwan is the first person accredited to teach the "contour thread" procedure in the UK, so it is just becoming available. The procedure is quick and can be done in the doctor's surgery rather than in hospital. There is no scarring and at most a week of downtime.

Results last up to four years.

LipoSelection

The latest weapon in swift fat removal is the Vaser machine which deploys ultrasound technology to emulsify fat beneath the skin before it is sucked out. What distinguishes LipoSelection from its predecessors is its improved ability to differentiate between body fat and tissues which should be left well alone, such as blood vessels and nerves.

It's quicker and gentler than normal liposuction and recovery is faster, too.

The S-lift

Traditional facelifts leave a scar stretching from ear to ear, via the hairline; the S-lift, or short-scar facelift, uses two S-shaped incisions about 10cm long through which the surgeon works to lift the lower part of the face, from the neck to the temples. The shorter scars mean less bruising and faster recovery; patients can return to work in 10-14 days (a normal facelift requires up to three weeks off).

Lift 6 Cosmecanique

The technique uses cosmetic and mechanical assistance to give the face an anti-ageing treatment which, claims the maker, amounts to a natural facelift.

Skin is exfoliated, cleansed and massaged, and is also manipulated in a session of facial gymnastics that strengthen muscles and improve skin elasticity. …
