Le Tallec Keen to Help Stead

Anthony Le Tallec is determined to help Jonathan Stead finally end his barren run of goalscoring form after insisting that he has no intention of finishing the season as Sunderland's leading marksman.

The Frenchman has scored twice for the Black Cats since his arrival on loan from Liverpool this summer ( his second strike coming against Cheltenham this week to ensure the club's progression into the third round of the Carling Cup on a night when his pounds 1.8m team-mate once again drew a blank.

Stead has only registered two first-team goals since the start of last season and is desperately short of confidence as he bids to prove himself at the Stadium of Light.

And Le Tallec last night admitted he would draw as much satisfaction from helping the 22-year-old end his drought this weekend as he would from increasing his own tally in a red-and-white shirt.

"I don't want to be the only player who scores here. I shouldn't be the top scorer, Steady should," said the 20-year-old. "I have scored two goals for Sunderland now and I like scoring but I don't like to see my team-mate unhappy because he hasn't got a goal.

"He didn't score again in the Cheltenham game, so he wasn't happy. He has got the confidence of the manager but it's difficult for him at the moment.

"I like to make the (decisive) passes for others as much as I like to score myself and the most important thing for me at the moment is trying to help Steady to score. It might sound a little bit strange but I really would rather see him score than myself. Once it happens, I'm sure he will grow in confidence."

Stead has struggled for goals since his first campaign in Premiership football ( he scored six times in 13 games for Blackburn following a pounds 1.25m move from Huddersfield ( and was on the mark just twice in the whole of last term. …
