A delegation to Westminster will spearhead the uphill task of reinstating Saltburn's famous motorcycle event.

The Saltburn Vintage Hill Climb had to be cancelled this year after it emerged the event was flouting traffic laws - as no speed or time trials can take place on public highways.

Organisers Middlesbrough and District Motor Club, helped by MP Ashok Kumar, have since been trying to find ways of getting it back on the motoring calendar. It has now been confirmed that a party from Teesside will soon head for London to meet a Government representative.

No date has yet been set for the crucial summit, although it should be within a few weeks.

The delegation will include Peter Hillaby, chairman of the Autocycle Union's East Yorkshire branch, and Dave Ransome, president of the Middlesbrough club.

Another participant, the Middlesbrough club's secretary Ernie Crust, has also begun a petition calling for the event's reinstatement. …
