Atlanta's pitching brain trust of coach Leo Mazzone, manager Bobby Cox and general manager John Schuerholz has been so good for so long that failure on a colossal scale is nearly unimaginable.

But Dan Kolb is that failure. And the really baffling part is that the Braves keep putting him back on the mound.

When he allowed the game-winning double Friday night to the Washington Nationals, it raised Kolb's ERA to 8.64 in his last 10 games, with a loss and no saves.

The Milwaukee Brewers All-Star of '04 is the Atlanta embarrassment of '05. He's 3-7 and has converted only 11 of 17 save opportunities. Batters have a .398 on-base percentage against Kolb, he's given up 68 hits in 53 1/3 innings and all 33 runs he's allowed have been earned.

Kolb was great last season and may have a miraculous comeback next season.

But this just isn't his year.

"It's very complicated and I'm trying to get the plays down to where I can line up and after you do all that, everything else is very simple. It's a transition for me that I'm going through that's very challenging. …
