Robber Jailed after Good Samaritan's Chase

A man who was caught by a Good Samaritan as he carried out a daylight robbery of a woman has been jailed for three years.

The judge told Daniel Howe, 32, it was an aggravating feature that he had targeted her because she was vulnerable. Howe had been drinking when he spotted 57-year-old Sylvia Hunton arguing with her husband in Stockton town centre.

Her husband walked off and Howe grabbed her handbag as she fell to the ground in the struggle and he wrenched it from her, said prosecutor Michael Bosomworth.

Mrs Hunton was badly shaken and suffered bruising, but Howe was chased and caught by "brave" John Sparke who frogmarched him back to her and recovered her bag. Howe had previous convictions for drink-related crimes, including burglary, theft and dangerous driving, Teesside Crown Court was told yesterday.

Jim Withyman, defending, said Howe was not a violent man but it was a mean and unpleasant offence. Mr Withyman added: "There was minimal violence. …
