-- American Red Cross officials said making a financial contribution designated for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts is the best way Southeast Georgia residents can help storm victims in Louisiana and neighboring states.

Checks should be marked "Hurricane Katrina Relief" in the memo section, and sent to: American Red Cross, 207 Rose Drive, Brunswick, GA 31520.

-- The Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind is opening its facilities and 56-bed dorm to hurricane victims. Adjacent to Laura S. Walker State Park south of Waycross, the 61-acre park has full bathroom facilities, an industrial kitchen and dining hall.

Camp secretary Jocelyn Hyers said the camp will work with local churches to bring in evacuees. The park is likely to need sponsors to help pay for clothing, food and other essentials and possibly transportation costs to the park, Hyers said.

-- Central Baptist Church in Waycross, First Baptist Church of Blackshear and First Baptist Church of Nahunta are accepting donations of bottled water and canned goods.

The donations may be dropped off at the churches during normal business hours and will be shipped to the disaster area each Thursday for the next several weeks.

-- The Wacona Elementary School PTA in Waycross is accepting cash donations for the American Red Cross relief effort. Donations my be dropped off at the school office during school hours.

-- Branches of the United 1st Federal Credit Union in Kingsland, St. Marys, Folkston, Blackshear and Eastman have established an account to assist Katrina victims. The money will be donated to the Red Cross to help with the relief effort. People do not need to be credit union members to donate.

People also can use the drop boxes after normal business hours by putting a donation in an envelope marked "Katrina Relief Fund. …
