Hundreds of jobs are sailing into Teesside, it was confirmed today.

Supermarket giant Asda has signed a landmark deal to develop a pounds 20m import centre at Teesport, which will create 300 jobs. A second phase is also planned which will generate a further 150 jobs.

Asda currently uses southern ports to ship in goods, but is switching a large chunk of this business to Teesport.

The move is seen as a massive boost for the campaign by port owner PD Ports to persuade the Government to give priority to its plans for a deep sea container terminal over proposals to develop three southern ports.

Asda says the move will help ease congestion in southern container ports like Felixstowe and Southampton, and provide it with an international logistics operation in the North-east for the first time.

Containers carrying products from a variety of international destinations will be delivered to the port, allowing the supermarket to distribute non-food products, such as clothing, electrical and electronic goods, to stores throughout Britain.

Asda estimates it will save two million road miles a year by shipping 70pc of its distribution goods direct to Teesport, rather than delivering to southern ports then transporting by road to its northern-based distribution centres.

The building will initially comprise a 360,000sq ft warehouse on an 18-acre site. …
