Pier illuminations on horizon

LIGHTING-UP time for Saltburn's Victorian Pier is on the horizon.

The North-east coast's last pleasure pier is ready to be illuminated from dusk to midnight after work to install lighting was completed.

National Pier Society chairman Anthony Wills will be among the invited guests to an October 6 switch-on ceremony, and to hear about work on the top promenade as part of a pounds 750,000 package.

The feature lighting, part of Redcar and Cleveland Council's Lighting Our Culture project, also extends to the cliff lift, the pier amusements and the nearby chalets.

Michael Phillips, of Lighting Design & Consultancy of Durham, explained: "The fundamental concept was to express the structure of the pier without damaging the valuable fabric. The innovation was to show the pier in 'relief' against the lit sea as if in moonlight.

"The design was further developed to provide drama during rough weather, lighting up breakers as they rolled in under the pier. …
