Whitley Warriors were comprehensive winners of ice hockey's first ever Tyneside derby when they took the points with an 8-1 victory over rivals Newcastle ENL Vipers in the English National League at Hillheads last night, (writes David Hall).

Now unbeaten in their opening six games of the season, Whitley never looked like surrendering that record against a Newcastle side that played hard but were unable to cope with the fast breaking Hillheads outfit.

The coast side were in control once they had scored either side of the nine-minute mark through Hakan Andersson and Stephen Winn.

Both went on to score twice, with Andersson also collecting the man of the match award and he was delighted afterwards to see the Warriors win another two points.

"The most important thing is we won," he said, "because that keeps the confidence in the dressing room high.

"We have some very difficult games coming up against the likes of Nottingham, Dundee and Blackburn at Hillheads in the next month, so it's very important that we win against teams like Newcastle before playing the tougher games. …
