St. Augustine Group Joins Travel Business; Historical Society Will Use Local and International Tours to Raise Money

ST. AUGUSTINE -- In a bid to raise money, increase membership and build loyalty, the St. Augustine Historical Society will begin offering local and international tours with historic themes.

The idea arrived in 2004 with new Executive Director Overton Ganong, who came across it while acting as director of a state museum in Columbia, S.C. The first trip will be a motor coach ride to Fort George Island and Fernandina Beach on Saturday, Nov. 12. Then the excursions become grander, including a 10-day journey by rail to the Canadian Rockies in April and a 10-day trip to Scotland in October 2006.

"It was an idea I was familiar with," Ganong said. "Other historical societies and non-profits have used travel as a fund-raising method."

The society has about 500 members and operates a research library downtown as well as owning the Oldest House. It will make a commission off sales and will enter into a partnership with Collette Vacations of Rhode Island. …
