TALLAHASSEE -- Frustrated by what appeared to be a botched instant-replay call Saturday night at Boston College, Florida State athletics director Dave Hart lodged a complaint with the Atlantic Coast Conference this week.

The play occurred late in the third quarter, with FSU driving for what would have been a go-ahead touchdown. Just before tailback Lorenzo Booker reached the goal line on a long pass, the ball was stripped by Boston College defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka.

The officials on the field ruled Booker had fumbled through the end zone and awarded possession to the Eagles at their 20-yard line. An ACC replay official upheld the call.

It was the second replay call to go against the Seminoles in three games; a Florida State fumble recovery was overturned during the season opener against Miami. Though FSU won both games, Hart said he's concerned about what he has seen of the ACC's first season with replay.

"If a call was missed by the replay official, and it's clear it was missed, then we've got to have an accountability system that sends a message to the rest of the replay officials," Hart said. "We can't have them missing. We can't have, 'Whoops.' That's why we went to instant replay -- to avoid the 'whoops.' So we've got to get the instant replay calls right."

ESPN replays appeared to show the ball hitting Kiwanuka's leg out of bounds near the 1-yard line, but ACC officials said Wednesday that if the video isn't 100 percent conclusive, the original ruling will stand.

"The replay officials' duties in the press box are to use the information they are fed from the video source," said Tommy Hunt, ACC coordinator of football officials. "His job is to take that information, and that information only, and base his decision as to whether irrefutable video evidence exists to change the call made on the field. …
