Breast Cancer Walk Draws Crowd

The First Coast Area American Cancer Society held its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fund-raising event Saturday at the SeaWalk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach.

Participants of all ages and from all walks of life, including women who have survived breast cancer, participated in the 5-kilometer, or 3.1-mile, walk on the beach.

They began arriving well before the 9 a.m. walk began. They had their faces painted with pink ribbons, did warm-up exercises together, socialized and attached stars to a display that honored those with breast cancer.

Vickie Rose of Ponte Vedra Beach donated stars for several women, including one for herself and one for her aunt, because they are both breast cancer survivors. Rose, a member of a Beaches support group called Breast Friends for Life, said seven stars were in memory of those who lost their lives to the disease and several stars were in honor of friends who are going through treatment.

Organizers expected to raise $275,000 during the event, which also included walks at Friendship Park in Jacksonville and in Orange Park. …
