NOTEBOOK; Hilliard's 'Big Boy' a Dual Threat

Hilliard quarterback Daniel "Big Boy" Thomas (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) has been effective in his first year starting at quarterback.

"He's been called Big Boy since Pop Warner, even though he was average size then," Hilliard coach Donald Walker said. "Now at 218, he means it."

Thomas has averaged more than 100 yards rushing and 100 passing per game this season, completing 60 percent and averaging more than 10 yards per rush.

"He's not quite where Zach [Whittenburg, former QB] was last year as far as reading defenses, but the difference is, when Zach tucked it, he could get a first down. When Big Boy tucks it, he can score. If he can make his test score, he should get a Division I offer as a linebacker or strong safety. He's a defensive-minded kid anyway -- he'll turn your helmet around on that side."

Walker said he moved Thomas to free safety this season from linebacker to reduce the injury risk for his new quarterback. …
