Club Ceiling under Repair; It Risked Collapse

FERNANDINA BEACH -- Workers are stabilizing a ceiling in the Fernandina Beach Golf Club clubhouse that a structural engineer warned might collapse, but the investigation is continuing into what caused the problem, city officials said.

Contractors began repairing the ceiling Monday in the clubhouse's dining room overlooking the course's driving range.

Repairs are estimated to cost about $15,000 and take seven to 10 days to complete, City Manager Robert Mearns said Tuesday.

The city's building official and fire marshal closed a portion of the dining room last week. A temporary partition has been installed to separate the damaged area from the rest of the room. The partition was put in along the track of a curtain wall that is used to divide the clubhouse dining room.

Club pro John Vickers, who manages operations at the clubhouse, said the closure has not affected operations and that all previously scheduled functions are going ahead. …
