Ashes star is fined for speeding on way home

Applying the speed of his bowling to his driving saw England Ashes cricketing hero Steve Harmison caught out.

As he headed home from the third test, Harmison was stopped for speeding by police.

The bowler, who regularly registers in the low 90s on cricket's bowling speed gun, had been heading home to Ashington, Northumberland, after the game at Old Trafford on August 15.

The Durham and England bowler's BMW X5 was stopped just after 10pm heading north at 97mph on the A1(M) at Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire.

Yesterday Harmison pleaded guilty to speeding in a letter to Harrogate magistrates.

The 26-year-old star offered no mitigation.

He was fined pounds 100 and will have three penalty points added to his licence. Harmison was also ordered to pay pounds 45 costs.

Life has been good for Harmison since he claimed his place among the cricketing greats as an integral part of the Ashes-winning England side this summer. …
