A concerned Teessider said airport security must be tightened after his teenage brother was able to get a Samurai sword on to a plane.

William Bell, 23, of Chapel Street, Lazenby, said he was horrified when his 14-year-old brother Joseph arrived back at Newcastle airport with a sword in his suitcase on October 11.

He bought the 15-inch weapon while on holiday with dad Ray in Benidorm, but amazingly sailed through customs in both Spain and Britain.

William said: "I think it is a worry that he has been able to get through customs without even being questioned about this sword, especially at this moment in time when there is such a shutdown on terrorism.

"I thought security was meant to be tighter - it is absolutely disgraceful. I have a diabetic friend who couldn't get through customs with their needle yet my brother got through with a sword. It doesn't make sense."

Joseph bought the sword because he wanted to hang it on his bedroom wall at home. …
