ARSENAL are to present the man who has become the most lethal sharpshooter in the club's history with an appropriate gift ahead of Saturday's game with Manchester City at Highbury - a silver cannon.

Thierry Henry earned a place in the Arsenal record books in Prague on Tuesday night when he crowned his dramatic appearance as a substitute in the Champions League game against Sparta with two superb goals that took him past the total of 185 set by Ian Wright.

And chairman Peter Hill-Wood revealed today he wants Wright to make the presentation.

"I would love to do it myself but unfortunately I have another engagement and cannot be at the game," said Hill-Wood. "And if I cannot do it then I would love Ian Wright to do it.

He is such a special person and a lovely guy who has a really strong connection with the club.

"Hopefully, we can get in touch with him and he will agree. That would be a superb gesture on his part if he agrees to do it."

Henry is certain to be receptive to the idea. After the win on Tuesday he described how honoured he felt to follow "a legend like Ian Wright".

Hill-Wood marvelled at the performance of Henry in the Czech capital.

He added: "After such a long layoff [through injury] it is magnificent that he scored two goals like that.

"His control for the first goal was marvellous. I am desperate now that he stays at the club - very, very keen that he signs a new contract, which I hope he will do."

Arsenal have already suffered three defeats in the Premiership this season, losing to Chelsea, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion, and the Arsenal chairman admitted that this campaign could well be one of transition as manager Arsene Wenger bloods youngsters.

"I don't mind that," said the chairman. "And, anyway, I am still confident and convinced that we will finish up there at the end of the season. And I hope Thierry decides to stay. I don't think that the financial side will be a problem. …
