Hardly Reward for Success

As the argument simmers over proposals for a regionwide police force, news comes through that the current forces of Northumbria and Durham will see millions of pounds slashed from their existing budgets.

Northumbria is the hardest hit with even the best case scenario seeing the force lose pounds 25.4m, resulting in either a cut in services or a huge hike in council tax bills.

Durham is facing a cut of up to pounds 14.5m.

Only Cleveland has the slightest chance of gaining from the four options that are being put forward to the police authorities ( and then only if one of the four is adopted.

That is not good news.

It will come as no surprise to Journal readers to be told that forces in the south will come out far better.

West Midlands force could see itself pounds 48.7m better off. Forces in the South-East may even be better off by an extra pounds 65.6m.

On this issue that is something we most certainly do not begrudge. …
