Great Start for Matthew

Eleven-year-old Matthew Holroyd of Ashington Trout Ticklers had the best possible start to his day's fishing at Witton Castle Lakes ( hooking and landing a superb trout of 10lb 8oz on his first cast.

Matthew, who was fishing a damsel nymph he had tied the night before, completed his bag with a fine brace of two-pounders.

The milder, wetter weather over the past week has brought fish back to the surface with larger trout seen cruising the margins in search of fry.

David Mordue had cracking fish of 9lb and 2lb and P Marshall of Blyth had a bag of 5lb 8oz, 4lb and 2lb. Stephen Freer of Hetton-le-Hole and David Coxon of Chester-le-Street, both fishing sporting permits, each safely returned 17 fish.

Anglers are reminded that as from Tuesday until the end of the season on December 4 there will be no sporting permits. The only permit available ( at pounds 15 ( will be one to take three fish.

The youngsters also fared well at Scaling Reservoir. Ben Rowe, 11, and his brother Thomas, seven, had a good day while fishing with their father. They shared a joint limit bag of eight fish including a 5lb rainbow for Ben and a 4lb 10oz fish for Thomas.

Despite the week's heavy rain the spring fed lakes at Sharpley stayed clear stayed clear and provided some excellent sport.

J Forster brought 15 fish ( including a 12-pounder and a 10-pounder ( to the net; Ian Young took a 14-lb rainbow and Edd Dubar had a 10-pounder.

S Shippley safely returned 16 fish while G Ewbank also brought 16 fish to the net including three for 17b 12oz. Glen Firby, visiting from Bishop Auckland, netted a 12lb 4oz rainbow.

T Renwick had the week's best fish ( 11lb 8oz ( and the week's best bag ( three for 15lb ( at Langley Dam. Corbridge angler Jim Chambers had a cracking eight-pounder.

This week small nymphs have done the trick at Higham. Mick Watson from Wallbottle, fishing a Black CDC Buzzer, safely returned 11 fish in a two-hour session. Peter Scott from Dinnington, fishing a Diawl Bach, caught and safely returned a fish of 11lb 1oz.

From Saturday the lake will revert to fly-only fishing.

It was another productive week at the Derwent Reservoir with more excellent fish landed and bags of up to 27lb reported. …
