High Time to Honour Eagles?

For most Geordie sports fans, football is the burning passion and the stars of Newcastle United are their idols.

But a call is being made today for the unsung heroes of the city's basketball team, the Newcastle Eagles, to be honoured.

While most attention is focused on the football club's fortunes, the success of the city's basketball double champions has gone largely unnoticed.

The Eagles won the British Basketball League play-offs title and National Trophy last season.

And members of the team, led by player-coach Fab Flournoy, are also well-known for their community development work off the court, particularly among schools.

This has helped swell home crowds at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena to between 3,000 and 3,500 a game.

Now Newcastle councillor and sports fan Ian Proud is calling upon the city council to award the Eagles the city's highest honour.

He wants the team be given honorary freedom of the city. …
