Drainage Clause for New Homes

Developers have been told their plans for hundreds of new homes hinge on proof they will not create a flood risk.

Permission was given yesterday for 320 new homes at the flagship Newcastle Great Park development site.

But councillors have made the project conditional on a written assurance on drainage from Northumbrian Water.

In heavy storms last autumn, drains failed at the site, which is earmarked for 2,500 homes and a business park forecast to create 10,000 jobs.

And there were concerns that flooding at 40 homes in the North of the city in June was made worse through work going on at the Great Park.

Newcastle North MP Doug Henderson had written to the council asking for a decision on the homes to be deferred.

But yesterday, he said: "This decision makes sense. While we want to see people having new houses, we must make sure that the drainage problems do not cause major trouble for existing householders. …
