A band of ghostly miners has been discovered by experts lurking deep in the old drift mine at Skinningrove's Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum.

Now a team of ghostbusters has challenged volunteers to spend a night with the spirits on Halloween tonight - if they dare.

Volunteer staff at the mine museum claim they first heard eerie voices echoing from the dark, empty depths of the old drift mine.

This mine was opened in 1848 and was the scene of countless mining deaths and maimings of men and boys who used to work there in dangerous conditions.

Other staff have reported feeling touches from spectral hands as they have checked the historic old mine in the twilight hours, after guiding people around for the day.

Now a ghost hunting team from Scarborough has visited the mine and confirmed the existence of many unexplained sounds and physical phenomena.

They claim the mine is a "paranormal hotspot".
