Bradley Mascot Ban Upheld by NCAA

The NCAA has rejected Bradley University's bid to be taken off a list of colleges whose American Indian nicknames, mascots and logos will be banned in postseason play starting next year.

An NCAA staff review committee ruled on Thursday that the Braves nickname creates an environment where fans, opponents and others can exhibit behavior hostile and abusive to Native Americans.

"By continuing to use Native American references in nicknames, institutions assume responsibility over an environment they can not fully control," the committee's written ruling said.


Georgia athletic director Damon Evans on Thursday named Eric Baumgartner as the school's assistant athletic director for compliance.

Baumgartner comes to Georgia from the NCAA, where he has been an assistant director the last two years.

Baumgartner was assistant athletic director for compliance at Clemson from 2000-03 and at Jacksonville University from 1997-2000.


Second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo won only two games Thursday, losing 6-2, 6-0 to qualifier Katarina Srebotnik in the second round of the Zurich Open. …
