Teesside's Liam Plunkett gave England hope of salvaging a morale-boosting win in their opening game of the tour of Pakistan today with a super four-wicket salvo.

After England's Ashes heroes were bowled out for just 112 in their second innings by the Patron's XI in Rawalpindi earlier today, the home side were set just 158 to pull off a surprise win from a minimum of 60 overs on the final day of the three-day clash.

And they got off to a good start, reaching 50-0 when Plunkett and Ashley Giles were introduced into the England attack.

Giles immediately accounted for opener Yasir Hameed (30) and No 3 Bazid Khan for a duck.

At the other end, Nunthorpe 20-year-old Plunkett struck straight away too, to have the other opener Ashar Zaidi (26) caught by James Anderson, who had opened the bowling.

Then Plunkett had the dangerous Asim Kamal caught in the slips by Marcus Trescothick for a duck and he followed that by capturing the wicket of Faisal Iqbal (2), who was caught by Matt Prior. …
