Rosie Gets Back to Her Real Form

Rosie Smith is once again showing the form which earned her a place in the World Cross-Country Championships in Brussels last year.

The 20-year-old Durham City athlete stormed to prominence 18 months ago by finishing fifth in the World Trials at Nottingham to earn her place for the trip to Belgium where she finished second counter for the GB junior team in 56th position.

Rosie followed that up by being selected for the European CC Championships last December in Germany where, once again, she was second British runner home in 12th place which helped secure the team silver medals.

However, after a glorious 12 months, things started to go sour when she lined up as one of the favourites in the North of England CC Championships at Consett in January of this year.

"I so badly wanted to run well at Consett with it being in the North East," said Rosie, who is now based in Edinburgh where she is in her third year at university.

"I went into the race feeling OK but the race itself didn't turn out that way at all and I eventually finished in fifth place.

"And it didn't end there either. At the Inter Counties at Nottingham a few weeks later I had the indignity of having to drop out before completing the first kilometre.

"After being on a high with trips to Belgium and Germany with the GB team, I was suddenly struggling badly and couldn't really put my finger on the reason why.

"So, from mid-May until the end of August I decided to take a break, did a lot of travelling and never once thought about putting my trainers on.

"I'm sure the rest did me the world of good for in recent months the interest and desire has returned and I've now managed to pack in a number of races in the past few weeks and I'm loving it all over again. …
