Unions are to hold talks with chemical firm Elementis in an attempt to stave off 120 Teesside job losses, it emerged today.

Elementis announced earlier this week that it was slashing the 230-strong workforce at its Eaglescliffe chromium plant, as part of an pounds 11m cost-cutting drive.

The Staines-based multinational said it was halving production at the Urlay Nook site after suffering from high energy costs and a strong pound - but union leaders today said they hoped job losses could be avoided.

The Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus will hold talks with company management next week and present an action plan aimed at rescuing the threatened jobs.

Joe Keith, senior regional industrial organiser for the Transport and General Workers Union, said: "We do not agree with the company's logic that it is necessary to reduce the workforce.

"We are obviously concerned that this is a decision taken to run the plant down and we plan to discuss an action plan with the company. …
