Injured Shaw Is Certain He'll Be Back in Time to Face Kiwis

SIMON SHAW today vowed to overcome a painful back injury and return to the England squad for their clash with New Zealand at Twickenham on 19 November.

The London Wasps lock limped out of Wasps' 15-15 Heineken Cup draw with Toulouse on Sunday. Scans and X-rays confirmed there were no serious structural problems.

The 6ft 9in lock was favourite to pack down alongside Bath's Danny Grewcock in the first autumn international against Australia on 12 November but is still not on his feet, to give his troublesome facet joints time to settle down.

Shaw is basing a rapid comeback on his previous back trouble which flared up in 1997 and did not cause serious problems again until earlier this season.

Instead of joining the England squad at Loughborough, Shaw has been allowed to work with the Wasps medical team.

He intends to linkup with England on 14 November at the start of the preparations for the All Blacks, although his lack of matches could count against a quick return to Test action. …
