Pires Snubbed Again as World Cup Hopes Fade

ROBERT PIRES'S chances of playing in the World Cup suffered another blow today when he was left out of the squad for two friendlies this month as part of France's build-up to the tournament.

Coach Raymond Domenech has contnued to overlook the Arsenal winger, who has criticised his coaching methods. Domenech said: "For those who don't seem concerned by the World Cup, it is finished. The World Cup is six months away and players have to prove to me that they want to go."

Pires's isolation will be increased by the news that former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka - who has also been out-of-favour - has been recalled for the first time in three years. Anelka, who left Manchester City for Fenerbahce in Turkey last season, walked out on the France team after falling out with then coach Jacques Santini and has not been picked since April 2002.

Domenech has insisted on calling up Arsenal skipper Thierry Henry despite Arsene Wenger's reservations about the dangers of players getting injured on international duty. …
