A charity is nearing its aim of raising pounds 300,000 to create a haven for animals - just six years after the appeal was launched.

Saltburn Animal Rescue Association (SARA) launched its pounds 300,000 bid in 1999 to create an animal sanctuary in the East Cleveland area.

By 2003 they had reached the halfway mark of pounds 150,000 - and now two years on they are just pounds 5,000 short of their target.

The team of volunteers is now searching for a potential site to create its sanctuary for unwanted animals.

It needs five to eight acres of land in the East Cleveland area which is accessible, such as redundant farmland.

Ann Prosser, who chairs SARA, said: "We have a team of foster carers who look after unwanted cats and dogs until they can be rehomed, but we can be snowed under and having an animal sanctuary would be the answer to our prayers."

She added: "We need around five acres, with outbuildings which can be developed. …
