Hundreds Joining Equal Pay Claim

Health care workers in Tyneside are demanding equal pay compensation pay-outs at the rate of 100 every week.

More than 600 nurses, midwives and health workers have now submitted claims in a bid to claim cash dating back six years.

That is more than double the figure revealed by the Chronicle just weeks ago.

It means the multi-million-pound pay-out facing health chiefs could be far bigger than originally expected.

Stefan Cross, the solicitor representing many of the workers, said: "There is no doubt this could potentially lead to a lot of money being paid out.

"We now have 600 claims registered from the Newcastle and North Tyneside area alone.

"The cases are at different stages and it would be difficult to say what a final figure could be because so many staff are still coming forward.

"At the minute we are dealing with about 100 new cases every week."

Many nurses and midwives have been left angered after discovering male colleagues, including janitors and medical engineers, have been earning significantly more than them. …
