It wasn't your typical gift.

When representatives of the Ronald McDonald House on the Southside recently answered their doorbell, two 10-year-old Jacksonville Beach Girl Scouts, Allison Fyffe and Alyssa Markowski, were there with some 300 videos.

"This Kids Helping Kids project makes us feel good knowing that in a small way we might help pass the time for kids staying at the Ronald McDonald House," said Allison, of Junior Troop 391.

Barbara Markowski, troop leader, said the girls got the idea from a book in which a girl who had stayed at a hospital realized the need for movies and began collecting them for other kids.

The scouts went to work.

A flier for the project was placed in St. Paul's Catholic School's newspaper and duties were divided.

"We had two boxes around school," said Alyssa. "There were signs on them that said they were going to Ronald McDonald House."

Markowski said the girls were emptying the boxes two times a day, and then St. Paul's parish started donating videos as well. The project, which was scheduled to run April 20-May 6, appeared endless.

"People kept calling, saying where do I take the videos?" said Markowski.

The Ronald McDonald House of Jacksonville was more than happy to receive the videos.

"You are making a tremendous difference for families in this house in a huge way," said Carol Harrison, development manager at Ronald McDonald House of Jacksonville.

The girls were given a tour of the house, which includes a chapel, community meeting room, family rooms, computer room, kitchen, playroom, laundry room, playground and butterfly garden, and told the movies would be watched in the family rooms, because it is there that the group comes together as a community.

"This is our home away from home for all families," said Harrison. …
