A mum today described her shock when a thug launched a firework at her and her two young children as they walked home in East Cleveland.

Sarah Whitney, 27, called the Gazette after she and the children came under fire as they walked home in Loftus in broad daylight.

The mum had just picked up her three-year-old son Harley from school, and was walking with her daughter Chloe down Rosecroft Lane when a "rocket" was fired at them.

Sarah now fears the attack could have a devastating effect on Chloe, eight.

The little girl suffers from ulcerative colitis, a condition which causes ulcers in her bowel to bleed and has caused her to lose weight.

The condition is made worse by stress and the attack, in which the firework exploded next to Chloe's foot, left the little girl in tears.

Sarah said: "We were walking home from school and there were five or six teenagers stood in a group.

"They shouted something and then one of them threw a rocket at us. …
