Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his young charges for refusing to hide during Manchester United's recent disastrous run.

The Red Devils returned to form in sensational fashion at Old Trafford yesterday, producing a performance of grit and determination to end Chelsea's 40-game unbeaten record.

A 1-0 win was the perfect way to end a week which saw abysmal defeats at Middlesbrough and Lille fall either side of a stinging attack from Roy Keane, which was deemed "unbroadcastable" by MUTV.

Fittingly, Scotland international Darren Fletcher, one of the players lambasted by Keane, proved to be the match-winner with a looping first-half header, a goal which even brought his injured skipper to his feet in the directors' box.

"Darren has taken a bit of criticism but people have to remember he is only 21 and was out of the game for almost two years and showed great determination just to come back from that," said Ferguson.

"Young lads like Darren are the future of our club and we do not want to destroy them. …
