Jonathan Edwards jumped at chance to support an Olympic hopeful at the Lottery-funded Gateshead Stadium

Former world athletics champion Jonathan Edwards CBE leapt into action to share his Olympic experiences with young 2012 Olympic Games hopeful Lewis Robson.

Lewis, 17, a member of Jonathan's old athletics club Gateshead Harriers, met his hero at the Harrier's training ground Gateshead International Stadium, to celebrate and highlight the opportunities National Lottery funding is providing for local young people. Their time together gave Lewis the chance to learn about Olympic success from one of the world's greatest athletes.

Lewis said: "I've had an amazing year so far and meeting Jonathan has been brilliant, learning from someone who has been at the top is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I am even more determined to make it to the 2012 Olympics now. I hope I do the Harriers and Jonathan proud."

Earlier this year Lewis smashed the UK record for youth Octathlon and came in the top 10 in the World Youth Games in Morocco, beating worldwide competition. …
