IT has been her almost constant companion.

The Duchess of Cornwall, who returns from her American tour today, has adopted a lizard skin tan handbag as her sartorial trademark.

In the US, Camilla used it as she and Prince Charles toured New Orleans and she took it to church.

But observers have noted that the haute couture accessory has barely been off her arm in the past six months.

The [pounds sterling]2,000 bag - a gift from its designer, milliner Philip Treacy - had its first official outing on 27 April at the Queen's Gallery Reception at Buckingham Palace, accessorising Camilla's blue tweed suit.

In May it was seen on five occasions: with a peach suit during a visit to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff; complementing a duck-egg blue suit at a Clarence House reception for the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer; at Devon County Show with a coral pink, long-line jacket and dress; during a visit to the Scilly Isles with a tamer beige suit; and on her first solo engagement at Southampton Hospital. …
