I went to the Opening Meet yesterday and three foxes were killed.

Before you start screaming down the telephone to the constabulary, I should add that our Opening Meet was in Scotland and the day's hunting was conducted strictly according to the law that maintains in that country.

Those who are not familiar with that law can jolly well look it up for themselves.

In England we now have "shunting".

I claim copyright for this word on behalf of my son, as (to the best of my knowledge and belief) he invented it as a description of the various forms of sham hunting that English law now allows.

I should mention the fact that my son is a "Headhunter" in London.

I am surprised that this form of hunting is still legal, but he assures me that it is. Even with shunting, foxes still get killed by hounds.

I hasten to add that this happens accidentally and there is absolutely no intention of catching foxes, so there is no breach of the law.

Defra has described the law as "crystal clear and simple to prosecute" ( need I say more.

There is little about the law (any of it) that is "crystal clear and simple", which is why we have lawyers to unknot it for us.

At the moment, the wife and I are spending quite a lot of time with lawyers ( lawyers to make smooth and broad the track to the sale of Breamish Parks and a completely different set of lawyers to brush out a path through the French legal thicket to "Le Petit Depot" which is the name of the property we are hoping to buy in France.

In some ways, French property laws are simpler than their English cousins, but the process is not speedy.

This may be because French lawyers tend not to work on Mondays, or feast days, of which there are a lot.

Also your French lawyer will have no truck with the nasty Anglo-Saxon habit of a glass of mineral- water-and-a-sandwich- at-the desk. …
