The Whitley Bay AS Open Shore Festival was held last Sunday with 294 taking park ( 97 weighed in a total of 330lb.

The winner was Tony Hailer, with 19lb 13oz including the HSF of 5lb 10oz and the second HSF of 5lb 5oz.

The next open is the South Shields and District SAC's 57th Open Shore Competition, being held on Sunday fishing from 10am to 2pm.

Registration is at the New Crown Hotel, South Shields, from 8am or from various tackle shops on Saturday until 4pm.

Entry is pounds 8 for seniors, under-16s pounds 2, with a first prize of pounds 500 for the heaviest round fish plus trophy. Second is pounds 300 and there are lady and junior prizes.

Boundaries are from South Shields Pier to Roker Pier excluding Roker Pier and its foundation and the round end on South Shields Pier.

Some reasonable fish have been caught this week. Kenny Goward took cod to 5lb from Druridge on lugworm, Simon Airies had cod to 4 1/2lb from the Cliff House area at Amble on rag and muscle.

John Laidler Jnr, a tackle dealer from Ashington, caught a cod of 6lb 3oz and two other fish on lugworm from Blyth Beach, while Paul Lunn, a member of the Shiremoor AC, fished the Midden Rocks and had two cod of 9lb 4oz and 6lb 11oz.

Sunderland tackle dealer Andy Rutherford fished Seaburn Rocks and using frozen crab and razor fish, took two cod of 6lb 6oz and 3lb 11oz.

The Bedlington Station SAC had 18 rods out and 14 weighed in 105lb. The winner was Brian Hurrell, who fished Hadston and took 18lb 12oz.

Second was Jimmy Tuck and third was Steve Surtees.

Blyth SAC had seven rods weighing in, with Brian Rochester winning with one cod and five whiting from Cresswell 6lb 6oz. Nige Howitt was second, Dave Todd, third, and Grant Downie fourth.

Cleadon AC had 35 rods out and six weighed in. Winner was Shaun Wilson, followed by Stevie Elliott and Ian McLaughlin. …
