Graeme Souness has had his first bit of good news as the Newcastle United manager warily eyes this week's international matches, (writes Alan Oliver).

The United boss has already seen Steven Taylor return home from England Under-21 duty with a shoulder injury which has put a huge question mark against him for the trip to take on Chelsea a week on Saturday.

That's why Souness was delighted to hear that another of his central defenders, Jean Alain Boumsong, stayed on the bench for the whole 90 minutes as France beat Costa Rica 3-2 in Martinique last night.

United's pounds 8m man is now almost an automatic choice at the heart of the French defence, but the fact that he has had a bit of thigh trouble resulted in common sense prevailing last night ( much to the relief of Souness.

Now with Craig Moore miles away from fitness and with no central defensive cover, Souness will be keeping his fingers crossed that Boumsong comes through Saturday's friendly with Germany in Paris unscathed. …
