Food Bank Has 2 'Angelic' Helpers

Each year, dozens of people assist the Mandarin Food Bank by donating their time, talent and finances. And each fall a volunteer is selected to receive the "Angel in Disguise" recognition in honor of his or her contribution to this Mandarin non-profit.

This year the choice was so difficult that two longtime helpers were selected. In addition to receiving a long round of applause, Elena Lana and Delores Hoffman each got a gift bag containing a special "Angel in Disguise" sweatshirt.

"Elena is the quiet keeper of the kitchen," said Bonnie McNulty, who co-directs the Mandarin Food Bank with Mary Kaminski. "She gives quietly and helps us in many ways.

McNulty noted that Hoffman also plays an important role in keeping the food bank neat and clean.

"Delores is our unofficial sweeper," McNulty teased. "She's always busy."

Lana and Hoffman accepted their shirts with a smile and quickly scooted back into the food bank to finish their tasks.

MUSICAL WORLD OF PUPPETS

Corner Carol Frye most any day of the week and one is likely to find her sharing space with the likes of Beau (short for "bodacious") Bear, his girlfriend Barbie Bear, his best friend Melvin Moose, Dudley Dog, Daisy Duck, Baa Baa the sheep, Leo Lion, Cathy Cat, Oink the pig or a mosquito named Itch.

Daisy, Frye noted, was her first puppet. A puppet that opened up a new world for this Mandarin music teacher.

A graduate of Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, Frye grew up in Tallahassee loving to sing. Her mother was her church choir director, and by the time Frye was in high school, she was teaching choir herself.

Though Frye has shared her musical talent with children of many ages, she adores teaching preschoolers.

"It's so much fun," she said, "especially when I have so many fun friends to help. You must use props to teach young children."

Among Frye's favorite furry and feathered props are Hootie Owl, Moby Whale, three mice (none blind) that perch on her finger, a set of freckled frogs, an old crow, Buzz Bee and Franklin Turtle. …
